Last weekend I had one of the most phenomenal meals of my life (and this is not something that I say lightly) at Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse in NYC.
With locations in NYC, Massachusetts, Philadelphia, and Atlanta, Davio’s offers an extensive gluten free lunch and dinner menu – steak, salad, pasta, fish, mouthwatering sides – all prepared with extreme precision and mindfulness of their gluten free diners. From their culinary director: “Our GF bread is the first thing prepped before the day begins – throughout service we use separate silverware and serving ware and we control every surface that we use to avoid any cross contamination. There is a strict process in place and we make sure we train all our staff to adhere to it every day.”
Elegant ambiance, sleek booths, an extremely welcoming and attentive staff – it was clear from the moment that Kris and I walked through the doors that we were in for a very special evening.
I started the night with a special gluten free cocktail called a Peachitini, which I am still dreaming about.
We shared an appetizer of Grilled Sausage, Marinated Peppers, Spicy Tomatoes, and Gluten Free Crackers. The meat was perfect and vegetables wonderfully spicy. The first bite told us that the chef was highly skilled.
Kris chose the Gluten Free Pasta Bolognese with Braised Veal, Beef, Pork and Tomato Sauce. A generous portion of a classic dish. Kris has a million adjectives to describe things that he doesn’t like, but when he enjoys a meal there is not much better praise than, “It was really pretty and very good.” In short, he loved it.
Is there anything more heavenly than vegetables and salmon cooked to perfection? The Seared Atlantic Salmon, Roasted Fall Vegetables, and Black Garlic Vinaigrette completely blew me away. I often feel that salmon dishes can be mediocre and plain, but this dish was exciting, elegant, and flavorful – the best salmon dish I’ve ever eaten at a restaurant.
Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes – The fluffiest and creamiest mashed potatoes in the world.
Roasted Brussels Sprouts, Carrot Puree, Almonds – A beautifully executed combination.
We were almost too full for dessert, but it was just too elegant to pass up. Delicious sorbet with espresso poured on top, gluten free chocolate cake, and melt in your mouth meringue cookies.
Overall, I cannot recommend Davio’s more highly. A superb dining experience with the most amazing food anyone could ask for. Perfect for a special occasion or any night on the town when you need a few Peachitinis…. I cannot wait to go back.
NYC friends! – On Friday April 8th, Davoi’s Manhattan will host a four-course prix fixe gluten free dinner to celebrate the bestselling author of The Gluten Free Revolution, Jax Peters Lowell. It will surely be a very special event. For more information visit http://davios.com/nyc/events/gluten-free-revolution
